- Prince (August 26, 1994) – “Come” Album Review – The Flint Journal
The 26 August 1994 edition of The Flint Journal features a record review of Prince’s album Come, headlined “No-name Prince stays in groove.” Publication: The Flint Journal Date: August 26, 1994 Country: United States The review notes that just as listeners were getting used to thinking of him as the Artist Formerly Known As Prince, along comes Come, a new album of generally naughty numbers credited to Prince. It states that according to the official line the tracks date from before he dropped his more pronounceable name, though they do not sound as if they had been in the vaults long. Most tracks are said to bear the loping, jazzy groove associated with the New Power Generation, with heavy breathing and room for instrumental extrapolation. Titles such as “Loose,” “Let It Go” and “Orgasm” are cited. The reviewer finds most of the sex songs pretty boring but praises the wonderfully soulful “Dark.” A photograph of Prince performing is captioned “It’s Prince, not that silly symbol guy, singing on ‘Come.’” CONTEXT AND NOTES The piece reviews the Warner Bros. album during the period when Prince was publicly using the Love Symbol while still releasing material under the name Prince. FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS Event: Album review Era: 1994 (Come era) Tone: Mixed, observational Photography: Black-and-white performance photograph of Prince WHAT THE CLIPPING SHOWS Headline “No-name Prince stays in groove” Discussion of the album’s sexual themes and New Power Generation groove Positive note on the track “Dark” Photograph of Prince with caption referencing the symbol name All magazine scans, photographs, and original text excerpts referenced in this entry remain the property of their respective copyright holders. - Prince (August 31, 1993) Pink Cashmere Single
CD single (Cardboard) - USA - 5439-18371-2 Pink Cashmere was the lead single from Prince’s first compilation albums, The Hits 1 and The Hits 2, specifically taken from The Hits 1 (also serving as the first disc of The Hits / The B-Sides). It came out two weeks before the album in the USA, Germany, and Japan. The b-side, Soft And Wet, also from The Hits 1, originally appeared on Prince’s debut album For You as his first single, which likely inspired its inclusion here. Pink Cashmere (6:12) Soft And Wet (3:01) Some versions featured single edits of lesser-known hits not on The Hits 1 or The Hits 2, making the two-disc single a sort of companion to those albums. These tracks also appeared on the Controversy single, released in regions where Pink Cashmere wasn’t, with matching cover art. The single reached number 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. It was the first release credited solely to Prince since the 1990 New Power Generation single, as all intervening releases credited Prince and the New Power Generation. Interestingly, Pink Cashmere dropped the same day the New Power Generation’s first “solo” release, Gold Nigga, went on sale during Act II tour dates, suggesting—though not reflecting reality—that Prince and the band were separate acts. 7" - Germany - 5439-18272-7 Pink Cashmere (Vocal Version 3:56) 7" - Germany - 5439-18272-7 The Future (Mark Moore Remix 6:25) 12" - Germany - 9362-41279-0 Pink Cashmere (Vocal Version 3:56) - Pink Cashmere (Guitare Version 3:58) The Future (Mark Moore Remix 6:25) - Glam Slam (Album Version 5:04) Mini CD single (3") - Japan - WPDP-6339 Pink Cashmere Soft and Wet Promo CD single - USA - PRO-CD-5993 Pink Cashmere (Vocal Version 3:59) Pink Cashmere (Guitar Version 3:58) Pink Cashmere (Album Version 6:12) Cassette single - Canada - 91 83714 CR Pink Cashmere (6:12) Soft And Wet (3:01) Selective Variants of Pink Cashmere — 1993 Country Variant Label Year Format / Notes USA Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 7" — Pink Cashmere (6:12) / Soft And Wet (3:01) — Cat#: 7‑18371 USA (Promo) Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 12" Promo — Pink Cashmere (Edit) / Pink Cashmere (3:39) — Cat#: PRO‑A‑5993 USA (CD Promo) Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 CD Promo — Vocal / Guitar / Album Versions — Cat#: PRO CD 5993 Canada Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 7" — Pink Cashmere — Cat#: 92 91827 Germany (7") Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 7" — Pink Cashmere (Vocal Version) / The Future (Remix) — Cat#: 5439‑18272‑7 Germany (12") Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 12" — Vocal / Guitar / The Future (Remix) / Glam Slam — Cat#: 9362‑41279‑0 Germany (CD) Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 CD — Vocal / Guitar / Paisley Park / Glam Slam — Cat#: 9362‑41291‑2 Japan Paisley Park / Warner Bros. 1993 CD — Pink Cashmere / Soft And Wet — Cat#: WPDP‑6339 SOURCES Discogs, 45 World, Wikipedia. - Prince (September 1, 2014) – "U Know" Single: Digital (USA)
U Know was issued as a promotional pre‑order download for Art Official Age on 1 September 2014, arriving four weeks ahead of the album’s release. The track surfaced publicly only hours earlier when it debuted through Celebuzz, after which it became available both as part of the album pre‑order and as an individual digital purchase. Its release coincided with Whitecaps, which was issued the same day to promote Plectrumelectrum, creating a coordinated preview of both albums. Although not a formal single, U Know briefly entered the SNEP Top Singles chart in France, debuting at position 182 on 1 September 2014 and remaining for one week. RECORDING While exact recording dates are not documented, U Know is believed to have been completed in early 2014 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The track is built around a sampled musical backing from Blinded, a 2012 streaming‑only track by Mila J produced by Jahlil Beats. A short excerpt of the Blinded instrumental appeared in Prince’s sampler set in March 2014, indicating that U Know was at least in development by that time, though it is possible the sampler set simply used Blinded directly. TRACK‑BY‑TRACK NOTES • U Know — A modern R&B track built around the sampled groove from Mila J’s Blinded, blending Prince’s vocal delivery with a contemporary rhythmic feel shaped by Jahlil Beats’ original musical backing. Although the title resembles No from Lovesexy, the two tracks share no thematic or musical connection. RELEASE HISTORY U Know was released on 1 September 2014 as a digital promotional download tied to the pre‑order of Art Official Age. It was also available for separate purchase on the same day. The track was not issued physically and did not receive a traditional single rollout. CHARTS & CERTIFICATIONS U Know entered the SNEP Top Singles chart on 1 September 2014 at position 182 and remained for one week. No other chart activity was recorded. Whitecaps was released on 1 September 2014 as a promotional pre‑order download for Plectrumelectrum, arriving four weeks ahead of the album’s release. The track debuted publicly only hours earlier through Vibe.com, after which it became available both as part of the album pre‑order and as an individual digital purchase. Its release coincided with U Know, which was issued the same day to promote Art Official Age, creating a coordinated preview of both albums. The song features lead vocals by Hannah Welton, marking one of the clearest showcases of 3rdEyeGirl’s collaborative identity within the project. RECORDING While specific recording dates are not known, Whitecaps was likely recorded in 2013 or early 2014 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The track was first mentioned publicly in an interview with Mojo Magazine released in February 2014, indicating that it was already completed or nearing completion by that time. TRACK‑BY‑TRACK NOTES • Whitecaps — Led by Hannah Welton’s vocals, the track blends guitar‑driven pop‑rock with a breezy, melodic feel, supported by Prince’s instrumentation and the tight interplay of 3rdEyeGirl. Arriving four weeks before the album, the single marked the first commercial release credited to the group. The B‑side, In A Spanish Villa, was also taken from the album. Both tracks were written, produced and largely performed by Prince, although his involvement was uncredited. A long version of Sex Shooter appeared on the 12" single and was unavailable elsewhere at the time. The song gained significant attention due to its appearance in the film Purple Rain, performed by Apollonia 6 during one of the movie’s key club sequences. - Prince (September 3, 2013) – "Breakfast Can Wait" b/w "" Single: Digital
Breakfast Can Wait was released as a standalone digital single on 3 September 2013. Although later included on Art Official Age (2014), the track originally appeared months earlier as an individual download on 3rdEyeGirl.com on 5 February 2013. When it resurfaced on 3rdEyeTunes.com on 17 August 2013, the accompanying artwork — featuring comedian Dave Chappelle dressed as Prince and serving pancakes, taken from a 2004 Chappelle’s Show sketch — generated widespread media attention and highlighted Prince’s playful sense of humor. This surge of publicity likely influenced the decision to issue the track as an official single. A remix EP titled The Breakfast Experience followed on 24 October 2013 on iTunes, with an Amazon release the next day and availability on 3rdEyeTunes.com beginning 5 November 2013. Although Breakfast Can Wait later became retroactively recognized as the first single from Art Official Age, it is believed that the album was not yet conceived at the time of the single’s initial release. Released digitally on 3 September 2013 as a standalone single. The Breakfast Experience remix EP followed on 24 October 2013 (iTunes) and 25 October 2013 (Amazon), with a further release on 5 November 2013 via 3rdEyeTunes.com. - Prince (1997) — NPG Dance Company
The NPG Dance Company was a short‑lived dance ensemble conceived, led, and directed by Mayte in 1997. Inspired after seeing the Joffrey Ballet perform Billboards — a ballet set entirely to Prince’s music — Mayte envisioned a dedicated troupe performing original choreography built around Prince’s work. Prince supported the project and contributed ideas, but Mayte retained full artistic control, overseeing direction, choreography, stage coordination, staging, and lighting. Prince helped shape the visual identity of the troupe, suggesting that each dancer adopt a distinctive look, including brightly coloured hair in shades like purple, electric blue, and shocking pink. Members were also given nicknames derived from Prince song titles. The ensemble included former Erotic City dancers Carla (Garrido) Kama, Lindsley Allen, and Melissa Williams, alongside dancers recruited through auditions held in New York in August 1997. The company brought together performers from the United States, France, Germany, and beyond, some of whom also appeared with Prince in select stage and television performances. The troupe’s signature production was Around The World In A Day, a stage show built around Prince’s music and featuring a section set to material from Kamasutra. Under Prince’s supervision, the dancers recorded vocals for a new version of Raspberry Beret, used within the production. At the end of August 1997, Mayte learned she was pregnant for the second time. Although she chose not to perform as a dancer, she refused to cancel the project, believing the ensemble had worked too hard to abandon the show. Prince accompanied her to the opening night in Chicago, where she directed lighting cues from the audience. Accounts differ regarding the troupe’s end. Some report that the NPG Dance Company continued into 1998 and was disbanded after the failure of the Around The World In A Day tour. In her memoir, Mayte recalled that she and Prince decided to disband the company immediately after the Chicago opening in 1997, intending to revisit the project after the birth of their child. The production was expensive to tour, required significant time and energy, and Mayte wished to focus on her pregnancy. Any plans to revive the project were ultimately abandoned following the loss of their child and the subsequent deterioration of her marriage to Prince. - Prince (September 30, 1995) – “‘The Gold Experience’ Reigns” Review – Akron Beacon Journal
This Akron Beacon Journal review from September 30 1995, written by Tom Moon of Knight‑Ridder Newspapers, examines Prince’s album The Gold Experience as a creative resurgence. The critic praises its mix of computerized production and emotional depth, calling it Prince’s most accessible and dramatic work in years. Publication: Akron Beacon Journal Date: September 30, 1995 Country: United States Moon opens with a playful nod to Prince’s identity shift — “What’s‑his‑name adds more drama to his latest album” — and explores how The Gold Experience reclaims the vitality of Purple Rain while pushing into new sonic territory. The review describes the record as “naughty” and “sexy,” yet spiritually charged, balancing sensuality with introspection. Tracks such as Shhh, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, and Billy Jack Bitch are cited as examples of Prince’s renewed focus and creative control. Moon notes that after years of uneven experimentation, Prince’s use of digital layering and tight funk rhythms results in a cohesive, compelling sound. The critic concludes that while The Gold Experience may not be Prince’s ultimate masterpiece, it stands as his loosest and most confident release in years. CONTEXT AND NOTES By 1995, Prince — then performing under his unpronounceable symbol — was redefining his artistry amid disputes with Warner Brothers. The Gold Experience represented both rebellion and reconciliation, blending high‑energy funk with introspective themes of identity and freedom. The Akron Beacon Journal review captures the cultural moment when Prince’s transformation from pop superstar to avant‑garde icon reached its peak, affirming his continued relevance in the mid‑1990s music landscape.
