"Free Urself" was released as a standalone digital single on September 30, 2015 through NPG Records. The release arrived without advance announcement and appeared only two weeks after the physical and download release of Hitnrun Phase One.
Although released during the same period, the track was not connected to Hitnrun Phase One and was issued as an entirly separate project.
Two days before its commercial release, the song had been made available as Tidal's Purple Pick of the Week, giving listeners an early opportunity to hear the recording.
The single holds particular significance within Prince's catalogue as it became the final single released during his lifetime, arriving approximately six months before his passing in April 2016.
