EMANCIPATION IN FOCUS

CELEBRATION 2026

Further details from the official Prince Celebration 2026 press release add an important new dimension to the Emancipation programming, bringing together people closely connected with Prince during this period.

Prince Celebration 2026 takes place from June 3–7, 2026, across Paisley Park and downtown Minneapolis, with Emancipation among the Prince albums receiving special attention during the five-day Celebration.

EMANCIPATION – A VIRTUAL CONVERSATION

PERSONAL & STUDIO

PROFESSIONAL

Mayte Garcia, Prince’s former wife, dancer and author, will take part in the virtual conversation alongside Hans-Martin Buff, a recording engineer on Emancipation. Their involvement brings personal and studio perspectives to the discussion of this important period.

L. Londell McMillan, Prince’s longtime attorney and manager, completes the conversation, adding a professional perspective to those of Garcia and Buff. Together, the three participants represent markedly different connections to Prince and the Emancipation era.

JAM OF THE YEAR – FULL CONCERT SCREENING

AUGUST 8, 1997

THE LIVE EMANCIPATION ERA

The official programme also announces a screening of Prince’s full August 8, 1997 “Jam of the Year” concert at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The announced presentation is of the complete concert rather than selected performances or excerpts.

The screening takes the Emancipation story beyond the original three-disc album and into the live period that followed, preserving another side of Prince’s work during the subsequent Jam of the Year era.

BEYOND THE ALBUM

FIRST-HAND CONNECTIONS

Together, the newly announced programming provides an opportunity to consider Emancipation as considerably more than a three-disc album. It was a period encompassing music, relationships, professional change, artistic independence and a new chapter in Prince’s live career.

Mayte Garcia and Hans-Martin Buff bring first-hand connections to very different aspects of the period, while L. Londell McMillan adds the professional perspective. The complete Jam of the Year concert then carries the story forward into 1997.
