Love Symbol Album is the fourteenth full-length studio album by Prince and the second and final album credited to Prince And The New Power Generation.

Released in October 1992, twelve months after Diamonds And Pearls, it would be the last Prince studio album credited to a band until One Nite Alone... Live! in 2002.

Because the album's title is represented by the unpronounceable Love Symbol, it is often referred to as Symbol or Love Symbol. The name Love Symbol appeared on the top seal of the original jewel case CD release and on the Peach single, which included My Name Is Prince as a B-side.

The symbol itself later became Prince's name in 1993, and he subsequently released six albums under that name between 1995 and 1999.

The album's cover photograph was taken from the 7 video. Early CD editions featured the Love Symbol embossed in gold directly into the jewel case, an unusual packaging concept for a CD release.

RECORDING

Recording took place primarily at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota, USA.

Most of the album's sixteen songs were written and recorded between September 1991 and March 1992. Unlike its predecessor Diamonds And Pearls, the album contained very little previously recorded material.

The Flow was the only track based on an earlier recording, being a re-recording of a song originally recorded in September 1990.

Blue Light was recorded in May 1991, making it the earliest recording included on the album.

Eye Wanna Melt With U was the final track recorded, completed in May 1992.

The final album sequence included two segues featuring actress Kirstie Alley portraying reporter Vanessa Bartholomew. Earlier configurations contained additional segues that provided more extensive narrative connections, but these were removed before release in favour of including Eye Wanna Melt With U.

The album retained much of the same lineup as Diamonds And Pearls. Rosie Gaines had departed, while Mayte was

introduced as a featured vocalist. William "Diamond J." Graves contributed scratching, while several tracks featured the New Power Generation and the NPG Hornz.

While eight tracks were largely solo performances by Prince, the remaining recordings featured Michael B., Sonny T., Tommy Barbarella, Levi Seacer Jr., Tony M., Damon Dickson, Kirk Johnson and the NPG Hornz.

STYLE & THEMES

Love Symbol Album combines solo Prince recordings with full-band performances by the New Power Generation, expanding the musical approach introduced on Diamonds And Pearls.

The album was constructed around a loose storyline linked together by the Vanessa Bartholomew segues. This concept later provided the basis for the Act I stage production, the Act I television programme, the 3 Chains O' Gold home video and the Three Chains Of Gold comic-book adaptation.

The project also marked an important transition period in Prince's career, introducing the Love Symbol identity that would become central to his public image from 1993 onward.
