THE STORY

A high-energy, party-oriented funk album with strong rap elements from Tony M. It features a mix of interludes, segues, and full tracks, blending humor, sexuality, and groove. Standouts include “Black M.F. In The House,” the smooth “2gether,” the epic “Johnny,” and the three-part title track “Goldnigga.”

CONTEXT & NOTES

Recorded between 1992 and 1993 at Studios 301 in Sydney and Paisley Park. This was the first album released on Prince’s own NPG Records label. Prince appears uncredited on vocals and instruments throughout. The second pressing removed “Guess Who’s Knockin’” due to uncleared samples from Paul McCartney’s “Let ’Em In.” The album had a very limited release and was primarily sold at concerts and specialty stores.

SINGLES

  • 2gether (limited release)

2gether was the first and only single from the New Power Generation’s debut ‘solo’ album, Gold Nigga, and the first to be credited solely to the band. It was initially sold at retail stalls during the Act II tour, starting on 31 August 1993 at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, France. Later, it was available at The New Power Generation Stores in Minneapolis and London, but never saw a wider retail release. The single featured several remixes of 2gether, though the remixers went uncredited. Due to its limited release, it wasn’t eligible for the charts.
