On December 21, 2000, Prince and Angie Stone's single "U Make My Sunshine," along with "When Will We B Paid?," was released as a free download from NPGOnlineLtd.com, complete with artwork. To access the download links, users had to solve a complex puzzle. The release was credited to both Prince and Angie Stone.

A CD version was released through retail stores and a half months later, on 10 April 2001. Licensing to create the CD was granted freely, and a CD single was sold featuring clips of tracks by unrelated artists Track Squad without Prince’s explicit consent.

The single's title track later appeared on The Invasion, but the single was initially for release shortly before the album, which was subsequently aborted. The album was not mentioned on the single's artwork, however, the single is the first by Prince to include a co-credit, apart those credited to Prince and the Revolution or Prince and the New Power Generation. Singles featuring Sheena Easton were credited solely to Prince.

The single peaked at number 59 on US Billboard Hot 100 Sales Chart and reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Sales Chart. It not the airplay chart
