Sex Shooter was released on 31 August 1984 as the first single from Apollonia 6’s debut album Apollonia 6. Arriving four weeks before the album, the single marked the first commercial release credited to the group. The B‑side, In A Spanish Villa, was also taken from the album.
Both tracks were written, produced and largely performed by Prince, although his involvement was uncredited. A long version of Sex Shooter appeared on the 12" single and was unavailable elsewhere at the time.
The song gained significant attention due to its appearance in the film Purple Rain, performed by Apollonia 6 during one of the movie’s key club sequences. The film’s success during Summer 1984 helped drive interest in the single and the group’s debut release.
