THE STORY
“Clouds” was released as a promotional CD single in Europe in mid-September 2014, shortly before the full release of Art Official Age on 29 September. The track had already been available as a pre-order bonus download the previous month. It received a strong European promotional push, with impact date listed as 29 September on the promo sticker. Although no official music video was made, Prince and 3rdEyeGirl performed the song live on Saturday Night Live during the album’s promotional campaign.
CONTEXT & NOTES
This was Prince’s first promotional single under his new Warner Bros. deal. The simple white artwork with bold black text echoes the minimalist style of some of his earlier promo releases (notably the 1983 “D.M.S.R.” promo). The single entered the French SNEP chart at #182 for one week. It remains one of the more understated but atmospheric tracks from the Art Official Age era.
