THE STORY
“Breakfast Can Wait” was one of the first tracks Prince made available when he launched the 3rdEyeGirl.com website in February 2013. It was offered as a free download alongside “Screwdriver” and a remix of “Rock And Roll Love Affair.” Six months later, on 17 August 2013, Prince re-released the track with striking new artwork featuring comedian Dave Chappelle dressed as Prince serving pancakes — a direct reference to Chappelle’s famous 2004 Prince sketch. The single was then commercially released via Kobalt on 3 September 2013. Although originally intended for Anthony Hamilton, Prince kept the track for himself. It was later included as the sixth track on the 2014 album Art Official Age.
CONTEXT & NOTES
The Chappelle artwork generated huge publicity and helped keep Prince in the cultural conversation during a period of independent releases. The track received its live debut at Paisley Park in October 2013 and was performed a handful of times in 2013–2014 (often as part of a sampler set). It was never a major chart hit but became a fan favourite and a notable example of Prince’s playful use of internet culture and celebrity memes.
