THE STORY

On June 14, 1993, Prince gathered his “power trio” — himself on vocals and guitar, Michael B. on drums, and Sonny T. on bass — for an intimate studio jam session at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The electrifying performances were captured on video and later shaped into the home video The Undertaker, incorporating a loose narrative storyline with actress Vanessa Marcil exploring the studio. Originally planned as an album project (under the symbol), it was released on VHS in 1995.

CONTEXT & NOTES

This session captures Prince in a stripped-down, high-energy rock format during a creatively fertile but turbulent period. Tracks like “Poorgoo” and “The Undertaker” later surfaced as audio downloads via the NPG Music Club. Test screenings of an earlier version occurred in October 1993 at the Minneapolis NPG Store. The final 40-minute video was released on the same day as The Sacrifice of Victor and credited to Prince (not the symbol name used at the time). It has never received an official DVD or digital release.
