Prince Presents: The Sacrifice of Victor is the inaugural official book release by Prince, published under Paisley Park Enterprises. The volume contains 52 black‑and‑white photographs documenting Prince’s life on the road during the Act I Tour of 1993, forming a candid visual diary of rehearsals, travel, backstage moments, aftershows, and performance.
The photography is by Terry Gydesen, known for her work documenting Jesse Jackson’s 1988 Presidential Campaign. She was hired as the staff photographer for the Act I Tour, tasked with capturing Prince’s world over a month‑long assignment. Having sent Prince a monochrome portfolio, she packed only black‑and‑white film — a choice that shaped the entire aesthetic of the book.
Each image includes a caption written by Prince. The book opens with the lyrics to “The Sacrifice of Victor”, framing the collection as a reflection on identity, struggle, and transformation. Though often described as a coffee‑table book, its tone is intimate and observational, offering a rare look at Prince’s day‑to‑day creative life.
Published during the Come era, the book’s stark monochrome style directly influenced the album’s artwork — one of Gydesen’s photos was chosen for the cover.
The visual language aligns with Prince’s symbolic “death” of the name Prince, documenting what he referred to as his “last tour” under that name. The book notes that upon completing the Act I Tour, he changed his name to O(+>
This period coincided with Prince’s contractual dispute with Warner Bros., prompting him to explore alternative creative avenues and new forms of expression beyond traditional album cycles.
