THE STORY

After the dramatic 1987 withdrawal, Prince authorized the official release of The Black Album on November 21, 1994 as a strictly limited edition. The CD was issued with minimal packaging — a plain black jewel case and a simple sticker on the front identifying it as the legendary album.

CONTEXT & NOTES

This 1994 release was deleted shortly after its limited run (January 1995). It remains one of the most mysterious entries in Prince’s catalog. The packaging is deliberately stark, continuing the anonymous aesthetic Prince originally intended for the 1987 version.
