THE STORY
Released five weeks after the Sign O’ The Times album, “If I Was Your Girlfriend” highlighted Prince’s vulnerable falsetto and intimate songwriting. The B-side “Shockadelica” was previously unreleased (originally written for the Camille project). This was the first Prince-related single available on CD (US promo only).
CONTEXT & NOTES
The single achieved stronger success on the R&B charts in the US and performed well in the UK. Its UK release date coincided with Sheila E.’s “Koo Koo.” The striking sleeve artwork features a dark, surreal fiery portrait of Prince. Re-released in 2020 as part of the Sign O’ The Times Singles collection.
