Pink Cashmere was the lead single from Prince’s first compilation albums, The Hits 1 and The Hits 2, specifically taken from The Hits 1 (also serving as the first disc of The Hits / The B-Sides).

It came out two weeks before the album in the USA, Germany, and Japan. The b-side, Soft And Wet, also from The Hits 1, originally appeared on Prince’s debut album For You as his first single, which likely inspired its inclusion here.

Some versions featured single edits of lesser-known hits not on The Hits 1 or The Hits 2, making the two-disc single a sort of companion to those albums. These tracks also appeared on the Controversy single, released in regions where Pink Cashmere wasn’t, with matching cover art. The single reached number 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. It was the first release credited solely to Prince since the 1990 New Power Generation single, as all intervening releases credited Prince and the New Power Generation. Interestingly, Pink Cashmere dropped the same day the New Power Generation’s first “solo” release, Gold Nigga, went on sale during Act II tour dates, suggesting—though not reflecting reality—that Prince and the band were separate acts.
