Partyman was released on 18 August 1989 as the second single from Prince’s Batman soundtrack, arriving two months after the album. The track was prominently featured in the film during the Joker’s museum sequence, and was inspired by Prince’s encounter with Jack Nicholson on set.
The B‑side, Feel U Up, was previously unreleased, originally intended for the abandoned Camille project.

The 12" releases included several Prince‑created remixes, such as The Purple Party Mix, which opens with samples from Prince’s earlier hits. The single continued the commercial tie‑in with Tim Burton’s film, and its artwork again used the Batman logo.
