EARLY LIFE & MUSICAL BEGINNINGS
Born Mayte Jannell Garcia on November 12, 1973, in Fort Rucker, Alabama, she grew up in a military family and began dancing at a very young age. She gained early recognition as a child dancer and won several talent competitions before moving to Minnesota, where she was discovered by Prince.
PRINCE CONNECTION
Prince first noticed Mayte when she was 16 during a performance and later brought her into the New Power Generation as a dancer and vocalist. He wrote and produced her debut single “If ♥ Love U 2night” and her album Child of the Sun. Their professional relationship evolved into a romantic one, culminating in marriage in 1996.
