THE STORY

If ♥ Love U 2night is the debut solo single by Mayte Garcia. Written by Prince in 1979 and previously recorded by him in 1987 and by Mica Paris in 1991, Mayte’s version was produced entirely by Prince and released as the lead single from her album Child of the Sun. The track features a warm, romantic arrangement with subtle Latin and Middle Eastern influences.

CONTEXT & NOTES

This single marked the beginning of Mayte’s solo career under Prince’s guidance. Multiple remixes were created, and the Japanese/European editions included exclusive versions. The song is one of the most personal Prince compositions given to another artist during the mid-1990s.
