THE STORY

Time Waits For No One is the seventh solo studio album by gospel and R&B legend Mavis Staples, and her first (and only) album released on Prince’s Paisley Park Records. Prince wrote, produced, and largely performed on six of the eight tracks, marking his first major collaboration with Staples. The album blends Mavis’ powerful gospel-rooted voice with Prince’s signature funk, pop, and soul production.

CONTEXT & NOTES

Prince first approached Mavis Staples in late 1987 after seeing her perform. Recording began in 1988 with Prince sending tracks to Memphis for Mavis to add lead vocals. The album represents a spiritual and musical meeting point between Prince’s innovative sound and Mavis Staples’ rich gospel heritage. Although it did not chart significantly, it remains a beloved entry in both artists’ catalogues.
