John Blackwell (Prince’s Masterful Drummer)

John Blackwell Jr. (September 9, 1973 – July 4, 2017) was an American drummer, educator, and session musician. He is widely respected as one of the finest drummers of his generation, known for his ability to blend technical excellence with infectious groove.

PRINCE CONNECTION Prince hired John Blackwell in 2000 after being impressed by his playing with the jazz-fusion band Vital Information. He became Prince’s main drummer for over a decade, performing on numerous albums and tours. John played on key releases including The Rainbow Children (2001), Musicology (2004), 3121 (2006), and Planet Earth (2007). He was a central figure during the Musicology and 3121 eras and was highly regarded by Prince for his work ethic and versatility.
