THE STORY

8 is the debut album by Madhouse, a fictional side project led by Eric Leeds. Entirely instrumental, the album features all eight tracks written or co-written by Prince, who played the majority of the instruments. Eric Leeds contributed saxophone and flute. The album was recorded in just four days at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, though the credits claim it was made at “Madhouse Studios” in Pittsburgh to maintain the illusion of a separate band.

CONTEXT & NOTES

This release marked Prince’s first official instrumental album. The tracks are simply titled “One” through “Eight.” It spawned one single, “Six.” Although it had modest commercial success, 8 has become a cult favourite among Prince fans for its raw, experimental jazz-funk sound.
