Elephant Box was issued on 22 August 1991 as the lead single from Ingrid Chavez’s self‑titled debut album. Released four weeks ahead of the album, it marked her first official appearance in any format. The single was available exclusively in the USA and featured multiple remixes of the track, all co‑written and produced by Prince, who also performed the music.
Although the release introduced Chavez’s sound and artistic identity, it did not enter the charts. The single’s various formats included extended mixes, alternate versions and promotional configurations, reflecting the remix‑driven approach Prince often applied to early 1990s singles.
The single appeared in several US formats, including 12", cassette, CD, and multiple promotional editions.
