THE STORY
The Self Titled Album is the first studio album by Fonky Bald Heads, a collective led by Prince’s longtime drummer and collaborator Kirk Johnson. The group also included Kip Blackshire and Mike Scott, both of whom performed regularly with Prince around this time.
Prince contributed by co-writing “Rowdy Mac” with Kirk Johnson and offered to play guitar on “Under The Same Clouds,” though he ultimately declined due to lyrical content. “Strike Up The Band” was also written by Prince for the project but not used. “Sex In My Bones” was first released as an NPG Music Club download prior to the album.
CONTEXT & NOTES
Released with minimal commercial promotion and no widespread distribution, the album did not chart. The artwork features a fiery circular design with the group members prominently displayed. It remains a sought-after release among Prince fans due to the strong Paisley Park connections.
