THE STORY
Released on June 6, 1989 as the lead single from the Batman soundtrack for Tim Burton’s blockbuster film, “Batdance” is a frenetic sonic collage built from film dialogue samples (Batman & Joker), guitar riffs, electronic grooves, and Prince’s signature funk. The B-side “200 Balloons” was previously unreleased. The single became Prince’s fourth US No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum.
CONTEXT & NOTES
This highly experimental track perfectly captured the chaotic energy of the film’s Batman/Joker duality and became one of Prince’s most unconventional hit singles.
