THE STORY
Released in the United States on July 16, 1988 as the second single from Lovesexy, “Glam Slam” continued the era’s minimalist packaging approach with clear sleeves and stylized stickers. The B-side “Escape” was previously unreleased. In a rare move, Prince tried to halt the single’s release at the last minute, feeling it was not the right follow-up to “Alphabet St.,” but manufacturing was already too advanced.
CONTEXT & NOTES
The 12" featured a Shep Pettibone remix of “Glam Slam,” giving it a stronger club presence. This release highlighted Prince’s internal creative conflicts during the Lovesexy period while delivering an ecstatic, spiritual funk track. The clear packaging became a signature visual motif for the era.
