Prince largely wrote, produced, and performed on the track (uncredited). Multiple remixes were released across formats.

The 5" CD single packaging features a split design: left side is mint green with a group photo of The Time in sharp suits and hats, titled “THE TIME” and “Jerk Out”. Right side is black with large pink stylized “Jerk Out” logo. Back includes full tracklist, credits, and barcode. Classic early 90s Paisley Park / Warner Bros. CD single presentation. Jerk Out was the first single from The Time’s fourth album, Pandemonium, released two weeks before the album itself. The B-side, Mo' Jerk Out, is an extended remix of the track. The song featured uncredited contributions from Prince as a writer, producer, and performer. It debuted on June 28, 1990, in the USA, followed by July 13 in Germany and August 10 in the Netherlands, marking a strong comeback for The Time.
