THE STORY
The Glamorous Life (full title Sheila E. In The Glamorous Life) was Sheila E.’s first solo album. Although credited as “directed by Sheila E. and The Starr Company,” nearly all songs were written, produced, and arranged by Prince. Recorded at Sunset Sound in late 1983 and early 1984, the album highlighted Sheila’s exceptional percussion work, energetic lead vocals, and charismatic personality across a tight, funky set of songs.
CONTEXT & NOTES
The album peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the Billboard Soul LPs chart. It was certified Gold by the RIAA in January 1985. Three singles were released from the project, with the title track becoming a major hit. The album played a key role in expanding the reach of the Minneapolis Sound during the Purple Rain era and established Sheila E. as a solo force in pop, funk, and dance music.
