On October 18, 1994, Prince's fifteenth studio album, Come, was officially certified Gold by the RIAA in the United States for 500,000 copies.

Come was the last album of newly recorded material released by Warner Bros. under the name Prince while he remained under the label's exclusive recording contract.

The album had been released worldwide in August 1994, eleven months after The Hits 1, The Hits 2 and The Hits / The B-Sides.

Prince subsequently described the album in the context of his contractual obligations to Warner Bros. At the time, he regarded the recordings as material belonging to his former identity while promoting The Gold Experience as representing his newer work.

Most of the album was recorded during the first half of 1993.

Race dated from late 1991 before being reworked in 1993, while Letitgo was the final song recorded for the album, completed in March 1994.

The project went through several configurations during 1993 and early 1994. Material intended for the album was at one stage considered for inclusion in the planned three-disc The Dawn project before Come again became a separate release.

A March 1994 configuration submitted to Warner Bros. did not contain the eventual title track. Warner Bros. subsequently requested the inclusion of Come, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World and additional strong material.

Prince delivered the final configuration of Come on May 19, 1994, the same day he delivered a configuration of The Gold Experience.

STYLE & THEMES

Come captures Prince during one of the most transitional periods of his career.

The album combines funk, R&B, rock and experimental elements while documenting the divide Prince was creating between recordings associated with the Prince name and the newer music associated with his changed artistic identity.

The album artwork reinforced this concept through the inscription "Prince 1958-1993".
