THE STORY
“Uptown” was released in Japan in November 1980 with the same A/B-side pairing as the US single. Beginning with a lone drum intro, the track explodes into keyboards on the chorus, with verses driven by prominent funk guitar and a minimalist instrumental breakdown toward the end.
CONTEXT & NOTES
The song uses the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis as a metaphor for a place free from prejudice and racism. Prince responds to a woman who offensively questions his sexuality, then rails against narrow-minded attitudes. It is one of his earliest tracks to blend social and political commentary.
The B-side “Crazy You” is taken from his debut album For You. The track opened the Controversy Tour and later appeared in the 2001 Hit + Run Tour. The Japanese release includes a picture insert with lyrics in English and Japanese.
