BACKGROUND
Originally released in 1987, Sign ‘O’ The Times captures Prince at the height of one of the most creatively prolific periods of his career.
Directed by Prince, the film is built around the Sign ‘O’ The Times tour and combines concert performance with an ambitious visual presentation.
Material used for the film was shot across three nights at Sportpaleis Ahoy in Rotterdam during June 1987.
The resulting production goes beyond the straightforward concert-film format, using staging, lighting, choreography and cinematic presentation to complement the live performances.
For the new Via Vision edition, the film is presented from a 4K restoration.
THE FILM
The performance draws heavily upon Prince’s 1987 Sign ‘O’ The Times material while also revisiting earlier songs.
Among the performances are:
Sign ‘O’ The Times
Play In The Sunshine
Little Red Corvette
Housequake
Slow Love
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Hot Thing
U Got The Look
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Forever In My Life
It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
The Cross
The film combines these performances with Prince’s distinctive theatrical staging and visual direction.

4K RELEASE HISTORY
Via Vision promotes the edition as a“Worldwide first on 4K UHD.”
For archival accuracy, that phrase is best retained specifically as Via Vision’s promotional wording.
A Japanese Sign ‘O’ The Times Ultra HD Blu-ray edition was released in 2021, so the Via Vision statement should not be interpreted in this Chronicle as meaning that no UHD edition of the film had existed anywhere previously.
The significance of the Via Vision edition instead lies in its newly promoted 4K presentation, two-disc configuration, extensive bonus material, lenticular collector’s packaging and poster.

RELEASE SIGNIFICANCE
The Via Vision edition represents a substantial physical-media presentation of Sign ‘O’ The Times.
Rather than simply reissuing the film on another disc, the package combines the restored feature with extensive retrospective material involving musicians, production personnel and others connected with Prince’s work.
The inclusion of interviews with Dr. Fink, Levi Seacer Jr., Cat Glover, Susan Rogers, Steve Purcell, Leroy Bennett, Dave Rusan and Edgar Kruize provides additional historical context around the music, filmmaking, stage production and equipment associated with the period.
The individually numbered lenticular packaging and oversized poster further position the edition as a collector-focused release.
