THE STORY Released on November 30, 1995 as the second commercial single from The Gold Experience, “Gold” is a soaring, epic ballad that Prince often cited as a spiritual successor to “Purple Rain.” The B-side, “Rock ’N’ Roll Is Alive! (And It Lives In Minneapolis),” was a direct response to Lenny Kravitz’s “Rock And Roll Is Dead,” recorded live at Paisley Park with audience chants from a recent show.

CONTEXT & NOTES This single bridged Prince’s final Warner Bros. period and his fully independent era. While it underperformed in the US, it became a Top 10 hit in the UK. The 12" promo was issued on gold vinyl, and the track later appeared in the 1996 film Love 4 One Another.
