Prince’s Xpectation (New Directions in Music) was released as a digital download album in the US by NPG Records (catalog number none) on January 1, 2003, marking his first instrumental album under his own name, initially unannounced and available exclusively as an MP3 download for NPG Music Club members without formal artwork, two weeks after the commercial release of One Nite Alone... Live!, with a UK release in February 2003.

In 2004, Xpectation was offered via the NPG Music Club's Musicology Download Store. The artwork, created by Sam Jennings, was officially unveiled in September 2015 when a digital lossless version was released on the music streaming platform Tidal.
