January 1, 2003: Xpectation

(subtitled "New Directions in Music By Prince") is the twenty-sixth studio album by the American artist Prince. Released on January 1, 2003, by NPG Records, it marks Prince's first instrumental album under his own name. Initially unannounced, the album became available as an MP3 download on New Year's Day, 2003, exclusively for NPG Music Club members, just two weeks following the commercial release of his prior album, One Nite Alone... Live!, and without any formal artwork.

In 2004, Xpectation was offered via the NPG Music Club's Musicology Download Store. The artwork, created by Sam Jennings, was officially unveiled in September 2015 when a digital lossless version was released on the music streaming platform Tidal.
