A powerful protest groove from Prince’s 2004 vault — newly mixed and released for the 20th anniversary of Musicology

RELEASE DETAILS

Date: April 5, 2024

Format: Digital Single Country: Worldwide

Track: “United States of Division” – 6:18

THE STORY Released digitally worldwide on April 5, 2024 by NPG Records (distributed by Legacy Recordings), “United States of Division” is a rare 2004 recording originally offered as a virtual B-side for “Cinnamon Girl” via the NPG Music Club. This 2024 digital release presents a slightly different mix with more prominent horns, marking the track’s first-ever appearance on streaming platforms.

CONTEXT & NOTES Recorded during the Musicology era, “United States of Division” reflects Prince’s socially conscious side — a politically charged reflection on division, inequality, and the need for unity. Built on a percussive backbeat, slinking bassline, synth textures, and sharp horn stabs, the track remains strikingly relevant. The 2024 release was issued to mark the 20th anniversary of Musicology and continues the Estate’s vault-release programme.
