A Breakfast of Remixes

This 5-track remix EP expanded on the original single “Breakfast Can Wait,” featuring four variations crafted by producer Joshua Welton. Originally a standalone track from Prince’s website in February 2013, the EP capitalized on its R&B chart success (No. 26 on Billboard R&B), adding remixes to boost digital traction. Featuring artwork from Dave Chappelle’s 2004 Chappelle’s Show sketch parodying Prince, the EP peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. Production and Context

Recorded at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota, in December 2012, the original “Breakfast Can Wait” was written and produced by Prince, with the lineup featuring Prince (vocals, multi-instruments), Hannah Ford Welton (drums), Ida Nielsen (bass), and Adrian Crutchfield (saxophone). The remixes were crafted by Joshua Welton in 2013, adding electronic and R&B flavors to the original’s funky, playful vibe.

The EP was a standalone digital release, not tied to an album at the time, but “Breakfast Can Wait” later appeared on Art Official Age (2014). Released during Prince’s 3rdeyegirl.com era, it bridged his 2010s output, competing with digital singles from artists like Beyoncé and Kanye West, leveraging streaming's rise.

Legacy and Collectibility

“The Breakfast Experience” is a playful remix showcase, with the Chappelle artwork becoming iconic—Chappelle humorously noted it as “checkmate” from Prince. The EP’s digital format foreshadowed Prince’s streaming era, and the remixes highlight his collaboration with Welton.
