A synth‑funk rebellion — Prince’s boldest political, sexual, and spiritual statement before the 1999 breakthrough.
✦ — SUMMARY
Released in the UK on November 13, 1981 by Warner Bros. Records (catalogue K 56950), Controversy was Prince’s fourth studio album and a pivotal step toward the global fame that would follow. Recorded at Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Hollywood Sound, and Sunset Sound, the album fused synth‑funk, new wave, and rock into an 8‑track manifesto exploring identity, politics, sexuality, and faith.
The UK vinyl pressing is notable for its misprint, listing “Do Me, Baby” as “Do We Baby.” Despite limited chart impact — peaking at #50 in the Netherlands — the album earned BPI Silver (60,000 UK sales) and set the stage for Prince’s ascent into the mainstream with 1999 and Purple Rain.
