A sharp, late‑period funk experiment from Prince’s vault — first streamed for NPG Music Club members before receiving an official digital release.

Glasscutter (also styled GlassCutter) was first unveiled on October 30 2004 as part of an exclusive stream inside the NPG Music Club’s Glam Slam VIP Room, paired with San Jose Jam. The track later received a formal release as an mp3 download from the Musicology Download Store on April 5 2005, labeled GlassCutter on the download page image but Glasscutter everywhere else.

A tape photographed inside Prince’s vault at Paisley Park lists the track with a date of October 21 2004, strongly suggesting this was the recording date — the same day Prince recorded Streets Of Panama and The Morning After, and just eight days before its initial VIP‑room stream.

In 2007, Glasscutter resurfaced as the second track on an early configuration of the Lotusflower album (later retitled Lotusflow3r for release), marking its brief consideration for a major studio project.

🟣 The Story

Glasscutter belongs to Prince’s intensely creative mid‑2000s period, when the NPG Music Club served as a direct‑to‑fan distribution hub for exclusive tracks, live recordings and experimental studio pieces. Its initial VIP‑room stream positioned it as a deep‑cut reward for the most dedicated members, while the later download release made it accessible to a wider digital audience.

The track’s vault tape date — October 21 2004 — places it within a cluster of tightly focused studio sessions that produced several unreleased pieces. Its brief inclusion on an early Lotusflower lineup hints at Prince’s ongoing interest in the track’s sound and energy.
