Released as the second compilation album by Prince, digitally by NPG Records in collaboration with Legacy Recordings via streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music on August 17, 2018.

The compilation was launched concurrently with the Prince estate's decision to make most of Prince's later albums—from 1995's The Gold Experience to 2010's 20Ten—available on streaming platforms other than Tidal, which had previously held exclusive rights to this catalog. The album, curated with the assistance of Prince's estate, features 37 songs.

One significant omission, highlighted by fans and the press, was Prince's only UK number-one single "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" from 1994. This was due to an unresolved copyright dispute that persisted until Prince's death in 2016, preventing the song from being re-released and casting doubt on The Gold Experience reissue for years.
