The Sweet’s "Love Is Like Oxygen" backed with "Cover Girl", was released as a 7-inch vinyl single in the UK by Polydor Records (catalog number 2001 759) on January 6, 1978.
The single debuted on the UK chart on January 28, spending 10 weeks there and reaching its peak at number 9.

The song was co-written the group's guitarist Andy Scott, and, musician who had played with various unsuccessful bands before becoming aie and sound engineer. The marked a departure from Sweet's earlier guitar recordings and featured high vocal harmonies. The extended album version the song, which runs for 6 and 57 seconds, appeared on their album "Level Headed" and strings as well as some disco elements
Their first release on the Polydor label after their departure from RCA was also their final Top 10 hit, reaching No. 4 in New Zealand; No. in Switzerland; No. 8 in Belgium, Canada, and the United States; No. 9 in the United Kingdom and Australia; and No. 10 in West Germany.

Later that year it was honoured with a Song of the Year nomination at the Ivor Novello Awards, although beaten by "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty. The song is frequently included on greatest hits compilations, usually in its edited single version.
