The twenty-third studio album by Prince, who was at the time going by 0(+> (as shown on the album cover), was released by NPG Records and Arista Records, came out soon after The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale (1999). It features guest appearances from artists like Gwen Stefani, Eve, and Sheryl Crow, and includes Prince's cover of Crow's 1996 single "Everyday Is a Winding Road". This pop and R&B album marks a shift away from the soul genre present in Prince's earlier works.

The album garnered mixed reviews from critics, who appreciated the guest appearances but were puzzled by Prince's efforts to tap into the pop music scene. Commercially, it reached number eighteen in the United States and number five in Canada, marking his most successful album in North America in over three years, though it had moderate success elsewhere. By the end of 1999, the album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The only single from the album, "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold," reached number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100. To promote the album further, Prince hosted a pay-per-view event called Rave Un2 the Year 2000, which was later released on DVD.
