Prince's Black Album was released officially for the first time in the US on November 22, 1994. and UK November 21, 1994.

Originally planned for release in December 1987, Prince hid the message “Don’t Buy The Black Album, I’m sorry” within the video for "Alphabet St." in 1988.

The release in 1994 was integral to his emancipation from his contract with WB.
