"Somebody Special" was released as the A-side in the US, with "She Won't Dance With Me" as the B-side. The song's lyrics were penned by Stewart and Steve Harley, while the music was composed by Phil Chen, Kevin Savigar, Jim Cregan, and Gary Grainger. Stewart, credited as Harry the Hook, produced the track, alongside co-producers the Rod Stewart Group and Jeremy Andrew Johns. The song peaked at number 71 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Steve Harley collaborated with Stewart to co-write the lyrics for "Somebody Special." They also worked together on the lyrics for another song on Foolish Behaviour, "Gi' Me Wings," and a third song that wasn't included on the album. In a 1997 interview with Smiler, Harley recalled, "I spent three weeks at the Sunset Marquis writing the lyrics. I wrote almost all of 'Somebody Special,' much of it with Rod and some on my own, as well as 'Gi' Me Wings'."
